Robert Allen,the editor of this dictionary ,is an experienced lexicographer and writer on language,now working from edinburgh.After ten years on the oxford English Dictionary he edited tionary,Was and associate editor of the Oxford Companion to the Engilish Language,and directed work on Chambers 21st Century Dictionary.As a freelance writer and edirot he has been a consultant for a munber of major publishing houses.He has writeen an updated version of Fowler's Modern English Usage and wirtes articles on the modern use of English in English Today and other journals.He is an honorary research fellow of the Department of english Language a at the univerisity of Glasgow.
